It's here! Each year, I tend to squeal with excitement when Pantone announces the new color of the year, and this year's pick, Marsala, was met with mixed reactions. Some people love it, some people hate it—I happen to flippin' love it! It works well on its own or in so many color combinations, making it perfect for your upcoming winter or spring wedding. Already planned those colors? No problem—you can incorporate Marsala and its buddy colors (not a technical term) into your engagement photos or couples and family portraits.
On a conference call this morning, Laurie Pressman, VP of the Pantone Color Institute, had a few things to say about why they chose Marsala as the color of the year. She noted that though they'd picked bright, "poppy" colors (including radiance orchid, emerald and tango tangerine) for the last few years, "that's just not where we're at right now." The red-brown Marsala is much more earthy and grounded. She also explained a bit of their process:
"We do not just divine the color by gazing at a crystal ball, hoping that inspiration hits," said Pressman, adding that they look at trends around the world and track colors that start to crop up regularly. "We have watched brown transition to a color family described as rich and robust...[and the brown family] has now taken on a more luxurious edge."
Pressman described Marsala as a hearty, warm shade that has strength and romance. "It's a shade that feeds us, feeds our mind, feeds our body, feeds our soul."
OK, well I'm totally sold on the possibilities of Marsala, and Pantone also gave us some fun color combinations that work with Marsala (and with your wedding ideas), which I mocked up for you here. Enjoy!
